Jazz Standards and the Real Book

Jazz standards are musical compositions usually from the Tin Pan Alley era that held in continuing esteem and are commonly used as the basis of jazz arrangements and improvisations. Many of these standards are from Broadway shows from the early half of the 1900’s. there are many blues compositions that have also become jazz standards.
The bebop era and hard bop era produced several composers that emerged specifically from the jazz genre.

Since few people nowdays are very aware of earlier Brodaway and Film music from last century, the current jazz musician is more likely to find out about jazz standards through exposure to The Real Book.
